Janie, Peregrine Falcon

Janie, the Peregrine Falcon Falco peregrinus anatum

Peregrine Falcons are part of the Falconidae family in the order Falconiformes.

Janie Janie joined us on her 4 month birthday (or hatching day) a gift from breeder Mark Bolton in Livingston who I met at least 20 years ago. She was in the camber, never seen a human, and is an angel right now. I picked her up in Deer Lodge and she rode the whole way home standing on the back seat listening to jazz. She is small, and Mark thought that she might suffer from vision problems so not a falconry bird. Maybe, and we'll give it some time. She hops on the glove for a walk down the driveway with the dogs every morning, is inside for hours on the big perch in the office, and rides in the car (with a hood for now.) A wonderful addition to the teaching team already. Her only predicament is how to hold the quail in her feet and rip the meat, so "mom" cuts it in chunks for now.

I have a big art show coming up at Travelers’ Rest right down the road, our favorite State Park, the capital of Lewis and Clark country. I was talking to Molly the director and told her I might name her Sacagawea. Molly informed me that William Clark called her "Janie" as a nickname during their expedition. So Janie!

Janie's just had her first program, here for 20 Japanese students, exchange with the University of Montana, and a big hit. This will be easy, hopefully not famous last words! (And the students were held up a day in Seattle due to a typhoon in Tokyo!) Next , two programs at U ofM and that biggie at Travelers' Rest, her namesake.
